The Start-Up and Business Environment in Singapore

Singapore, in the heart of Asia, has long been an open economy, with an excellent reputation as a business hub, offering access to some of the largest and fastest growing markets in the world. Many large and medium sized corporations have chosen Singapore as the location for their regional or even global headquarters. Since about 10 years, significant investments are made in developing a basic and applied research infrastructure as well as attracting scientific and technological talent. To capture the value created by research and development, entrepreneurship and the formation of new companies is receiving significant attention. The National Research Foundation (NRF) is spearheading initiatives to attract investment to Singapore by providing matching grants to Venture Capitalists and Incubators. NRF is also funding University based research that is in the proof of principle and prototyping stage. In December 2009, NRF rendered support to seven incubators (Clearbridge Accelerator, I2G Tech Accelerator, Neoteny Labs, Plug and Play Singapore, Social Slingshot, Small World Group, Stream Global) under the technology incubation scheme and in March 2012 it added 8 more incubators (Get2Volume Accelerator, Golden Gate Ventures (GGV), IncuVest, Jungle Ventures, The Biofactory, The Network Fund (TNF), WaveMaker Labs) into the program. The SMART (Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology) Centre is directly funding University based research and, in addition, provides mentorship for faculty and students who want to start up innovative business.

NUS Enterprise Centre (NEC)

Centre for management of innovation and technopreneurship (CMIT) was established in 1988 to initiate commercialization of research activities in NUS. In 2001, it became a part NUS Enterprise and is now the NEC. NEC extends a wide range of services to emerging start-ups initiated by NUS staff and students as well as NUS alumni. It also houses NUS Enterprise Incubator (NEI) which provides infrastructure support to aspiring entrepreneurs. It also facilitates training workshops, mentoring programme, introductions to venture capitalists and angel investors, linkages to business networking contacts and other corporate shared services.
